Slab of Meat for 'The Merchant of Venice' at Trinity Rep, 2012
During the famous 'pound of flesh' courtroom scene in William Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice', our Shylock rolled out a cart with a slab of meat and actually measured out a pound of animal flesh with which to weigh against Antonio's.
The meat was carved from pink foam and coated in Sculpta-Coat with latex paint. Magnets were imbedded in one corner to allow a piece to be removed when 'cut'. The whole prop was covered in stage blood which was smeared across Shylock's tallis. The prop also has a squirt bulb built into the top which could be pressed to spurt blood.
